Thursday Round-Up ☕

Hello folks!

I want to start this new section on the blog where I briefly comment on the releases of the respective month that didn’t have a solo post for it here that I felt like I didn’t have that much to add so a small review will do or I lack time to do it. What you guys think? It will be made on Thursdays with no weekly obligation but with implied frequency.

Well, therefore, let’s start with my thoughts:

A couple of months ago, The Rose had it’s debut with a nice slow poprock in “Sorry” and they’re back with it. This one doesn’t excite me as much and it sounds more like the stuff Day6 is putting up and making me frustrated.

Like I said on my October faves post, Seventeen is not a group that goes out of the ordinary for me except for it’s Performance Team. In Clap they give continuity to a work I feel it’s becoming more and more elaborated but that still didn’t charmed me. The track is fun, has a interesting backtrack and is energetic but that’s all. There isn’t a moment I love on it but there’s nothing bad about either.

The instrumental on this one is exciting and reinforces, as much as the choreography, a 2013 vibe to the song that is cool. But the song as whole doesn’t stayed with me at all. And just like the title suggests, the obsession with saying the girl is his all his blah blah is a little too much for me.

I love Minah’s voice to death and I love slow-tempo intimate tracks with female vocals, but this one didn’t made much for me. The second part after the chorus when the song adds some elements is nice but not enough to hold it.

I watched Produce 101 and not seeing Jeon Soyeon making it to the cut or even CLC made me frustrated since she was one of the most charismatic and nice rappers on the show. But passing that, Jelly is just regular for me and I didn’t listened to it many times after I first watched the MV, but for a debut, it’s quite OK to see where they (Cube) could take her.

This group released two promotional tracks, this one and a ballad I’ll talk about bellow. Bubblegum is a feel-good, refreshing short tune I got myself putting on this week playlist.

And Deeper In Love is the kind of ballad that I like on k-indie scenario, a not so obvious instrumental with more soul, a more subtle drama on the vocals and oh, heartbreak.

Astro is another group that doesn’t catch my eye, even more than SVT. In comparison to their other singles, Crazy Sexy Cool is by far my favorite one but that doesn’t mean I love it. Is a funky tropical house that although pleasant is not memorable for me. But is a good start.

Another group I don’t care much but for different reasons. By the time I started liking k-pop, Super Junior was always rolled on some shit some member did and that got me real lazy for the group, even though I’m aware of most their singles (that once again, I’m pretty lazy for it.) So yeah, Black Suit was definitely a good surprise. This song is exciting, the MV is fun to watch and the chorus is pretty catchy.

It really seems that TS finally decided to really enrich Sonamoo’s repertoire this year giving a second great single with I (Knew It), that already has a reserved spot on my November favorites.

Just like ClapDramarama has a interesting guitar backtrack that catches my attention but doesn’t gear. Something is missing for me here. The sing and rap parts needed to be more aggressive, more present, like Shownu’s part on the chorus or the hook for example.

I like this, this is fun. The pre-chorus and chorus are really nice and the overall instrumental is groovy and easy to listen to, specially on the singing parts. Nice.

Oh, this MV is so good. The song is meh. It had all the elements for me to like: it’s fun, colorful and nonsensical. But it doesn’t have a moment, something is definitely missing and ends standing in the middle for me.

Another PD101 girl release, here’s So Hee So Bok So Bok, a very lukewarm one.

Another regular release, a tropical house with infused synths. Not close to memorable but I don’t dislike it either (yet another one on this list lol.)

Both Suran and Crush are super gifted and soulful artists that I’m a huge fan of but in order to stay relevant, this big number of releases both do (along with Heize) without anything outstanding on it gives a slight undermining on their catalog in my point of view. Quality over quantity, please.

This version is in a form of movie so if you want to solely listen to the track, is here. Regarding the MV, I love this childhood friends narrative, is very cute. Now regarding the track, is a very OK generic ballad that I’ll probably not listen to again, like 90% of this list.

Queens of 80’s synth aegyo are back. About the song, Lovelyz is one of the few groups for me (along with Gfriend and few others) that emulates high-pitched tones in function of the cute and it doesn’t put me off, I actually love it. Their other two releases this year, “WoW!” and “Now, We” are far better than this one but Twinkle doesn’t disappoint and has some good moments here and there like the disco/8-bit backtrack and chorus.

I really like the simple visuals of this MV and the track is my second favorite from the album after the single, so yeah, it’s a win/win.
